This tutorial is meant to share the topic of refraction with opticians who would like to learn the concept from a fellow optician. This is a skill that is strongly related to our daily activity as opticians and other allied health care practitioners.
Understanding and using refraction will make the collaboration between optician and optometrist superior and more effective for the patient benefit. National competencies are detailing all aspects of entry to practice including necessary knowledge in the refraction field. My intention is to provide perspective that is common language in opticianry, The material is not intended to substitute a formal didactic material provide in a school setting.
The first part of this tutorial contains two sections, theoretical lectures covering the following:
- The concepts of general approach to patient history and chief complaint, tests and methods of determining objective refraction and equipment used.
- Binocular vision testing and subjective refraction, equipment used followed by some case scenarios. A post lecture test will measure the knowledge gained in multiple choice questions format.
